Modern Bridal Favorite 6: Simply Gardenia

Above all, Sarah von Pollaro, Kennedy Center floral director and star of Flower Empowered, insisted upon the gardenia being part of the Forever Flowers collection by Repoussé Jewelry by Galmer. Not just because it is a modern bridal favorite or because it is ALWAYS a bridal favorite, but because it was her dear grandmother’s personal favorite flower.

Also, Carolyn O’Keefe’s grandfather gave her grandmother a single gardenia corsage every Christmas, which she’d remove from the square box with trembling hands every single time.

The gardenia is the world’s most luscious flower, named after Dr, Alexander Garden, a Scottish-born naturalist. The gardenia is a symbol of a secret love, a compliment on someone’s utter loveliness and a message of deep passion. The flower which comes from the gardenia shrub is single and only one flower comes off of one bud. Meaning each is incredibly special and thus a favorite in bridal party bouquets.

Then there is the gardenia’s scent, rich and yummy. It captivates, it caresses, it lingers.

The Greeks thought gardenias were able to transport the sniffer to Elysium, which are heavenly estates where life is sweet, and all is joy.  In the Victorian era of flower-language, gardenias were given as a symbol of new, promising friendships. In France, men wore fragrant gardenias to express their purity of intent in attracting a compatible mate.

For weddings, we love how the gardenia is used as a cake motif, as a table adornment, as a hair accessory and of course as the star, always the star, of bridal party bouquets. We love an all-gardenia bouquet but it works well with other flowers too…as long as those other flowers realize they are supporting players.

Gardenias can be rigorously symmetrical but they also come delightfully asymmetrical, and that’s the flower, so natural, fresh and youthful, that Michael Galmer chose as his inspiration for the Simply Gardenia Pendant and Earrings for Repoussé Jewelry.  Try them on, experience the charm.

On the ear, the splayed petals give the face a shining uplift and on the décolletage, the Simply Gardenia Pendant draws attention…adorably.  The finest silver, the artisanal design.
